The 5 Scariest Dog Breeds That Are Actually Total Sweethearts

The same way many small, cute and fluffy dogs can have the charisma of a rabid badger, so too can dogs who look and sound like Jabba the Hut actually be sweet, gentle giants.

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the five scariest, most intimidating dogs who are in reality, gentle giants.

  • Great Dane

Although they’re the size of a donkey (32 inches and 200 pounds to be exact) but who’s counting? And although they were originally bred to hunt boars (they used to be called Boar Hounds), he truth is that these massive canines are really gentle and love everybody making great family dogs…unless your family lives in a one-bedroom studio apartment.

  • Dogue De Bordeaux

Otherwise known as the French Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux weighs in at 150 pounds and is about 27 inches tall. Despite its Jabba the Hut like appearance, these are actually one of the sweetest (and laziest) dogs you will ever come across.

  • American Pitbull Terrier

You probably heard a lot of horror stories about pit bulls being vicious. well, they are…but against other dogs, not people. Purebred pit bulls were bred to be dog fighters making them prone to attack other dogs. But when it comes to people, they are totally sweet and will melt in your lap. Most stories you may have heard about pitbulls attacking people were often cross bred with American staffordshire terriers and mastiffs.

  • American Bulldog

These beasts can pull 500 pounds of steel in their sleep and although they make great watchdogs, they are even better family dogs. These beefy trucks weigh approximately 130 pounds of pure muscle and reach a height of about 28 inches.

  • Irish Wolfhound

At first glance, these towering creatures look a lot like dinosaurs. But they are quite the epitome of gentle giants when it comes to dogs. They are the tallest of all dog breeds reaching a whopping 32 inches. It’s scrawny body type and wiry grey hair don’t make it the cutest breed, but its pleasant and calm disposition make it the ideal family dog.
